Fair Update for Swine Exhibitors: The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is recommending that fairs only keep their hogs on exhibition for 72 hours or less in order to reduce stress and maintain health. MDARD suggests closing the barn after 72 hours or shipping the hogs after 72 hours. At this time, this is only a recommendation and not mandatory for fairs. The Midland Fairboard has chosen to continue as in the past with a full week of exhibition. However, in order to reduce stress through movement, they will not provide the out of book Pee Wee swine showmanship classes on Friday morning of fair. The swine barn will close at 9:30p.m. every evening except Thursday. The swine superintendents will continue to disinfect weight scales and handling boards after each trailer load at animal weigh-in. They also reserve the right to not accept a market hog exhibiting any sign of illness (i.e., high temperature, running nose, coughing, etc.). They will also not accept any market hog that was transported with a hog exhibiting any signs of illness.
